National Bike Month

May is National Bike Month and is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride. Whether you bike to work or school, to save money or time, to preserve your health or the environment, to explore your community or get to your destination, get involved in Bike Month in your city or state. Help get more people in your community out riding too!

No matter where you live in the U.S., there are sure to be many bicycling-related events, including those surrounding Bike to Work Week and Bike to Work Day, and the first ever Bike to School Day. This year Bike to Work Week is May 14-18 and Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 18. The inaugural Bike to School Day is May 9, 2012.

The League of American Bicyclists is the national sponsor of Bike Month and has free Bike Month promo tools like logos, posters and banners to place on your Web site. Printer files can also be requested at communications@bikeleague.org.

The League has several bike education resources to help you ride confidently and safely this May. Their “Ride Better” page has detailed the Rules of the Road and commuting tips to making riding fun and safe for all new and returning riders. Simple bike maintenance and fix-it info is also located located on the Ride Better page.

This month the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and AAA are teaming up to launch the annual “Be a Roll Model” public awareness campaign, with a focus on bicycle safety.

In communities across the U.S. kids can take part in interactive bicycle skills challenges. There is also information for parents and adult bicyclists. Free bicycle inspections are performed by experts.
