Italy is known for many things – its rich history, beautiful architecture, and of course, its world-renowned cuisine. But did you know that Italy is also home to some of the best bicycle manufacturers in the world?
In this article, we will be taking a closer look at the top 20 Italian bicycle brands that have been creating and innovating for years.
From classic road bikes to modern e-bikes, many Italian bike brands are vying for your attention. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the world of Italian bicycle brands and discover what makes them so special.
Are Many Bikes Made in Italy?
Italy has a long history of producing high-quality bicycles and today many brands are still based in the region.
Although the country has produced bikes of all kinds, it’s the Italian’s relationship with the road bike that is the most storied. Arguably it’s a relationship that other countries like Germany, the USA, Britain, Canada or any other European country for that matter can’t hold a candle to.
However, the actual production of bikes in Italy, like many other countries, has decreased in recent years due to competition from other countries with lower labor and production costs.
As the bike frame material of choice (especially in road bikes) switched to aluminium and then to carbon fiber, Italy’s artisanal frame builders and welders who specialised in working with steel were superseded by casting and moulding techniques hewned in Asia.
That said, some brands never left the Italian mainland. Brands like Pegoretti and Tommasini have always focussed on custom, extremely beautiful and incredibly expensive bikes for very discerning clientele.
These days some larger-scale Italian bike manufacturers still produce their bikes, or some of their higher-end models at least, in Italy, and many include that difference as a key selling point in their marketing campaigns. Just watch out for those brands that market ‘Made in Italy’ despite their frames originating from another country. Italian bike brands like this usually maintain a bike building facility in the country rather than a full-frame production operation.
Whether that bothers you or not, it’s clear that Italy maintains a passion for the bicycle. In 2022 the country was Europe’s third largest manufacturer of bikes producing nigh on 2.5 million units in just one year – incredible, right?
Italy’s bike manufacturers have tended to cluster in two of the country’s main regions – the Veneto in the North East and the more populous and industrialised region of Lombardy in the West. Even with the shift to production in Asia, brands have still tended to base themselves in these regions. Indeed, of the 20 manufacturers included on our list below, only four aren’t located in either Lombardy or the Veneto.

Best Italian Bike Brands (Top 5)
1. Bianchi
Bianchi is a renowned Italian bicycle manufacturer that has been in business for over a century. Founded in 1885 by Edoardo Bianchi, the company has become synonymous with high-quality bikes that offer superior performance, comfort, and style.
Over the years, Bianchi has produced some of the most iconic bicycles in the world, including the Bianchi Pista – a fixed-gear bike which became a cult classic.
The company’s signature color is “Celeste,” which is a turquoise-green color that has become synonymous with the brand. It was arguably Italy’s greatest cyclist, Fausto Coppi, that brought the Celeste color into the mainstream when he won the Giro d’Italia in 1946 aboard a bike in that fabled color.
Bianchi has always been at the forefront of innovation in the cycling industry. The company was the first to introduce a women’s-specific bike, as well as the first to use aluminum, carbon fiber, and titanium in its frames. Today, Bianchi continues to push the boundaries, investing heavily in research and development in order to produce more game-changing bikes.
Given Bianchi’s long history in road cycle sport, the company has continued to sponsor some of the top professional teams in the world, including Team Jumbo-Visma. Perhaps this has gone someway to continue the brand’s appeal amongst everyday road riders.
Although it might be a little unfair to say, the Bianchi brand has perhaps lost some of its appeal as competitors like Colnago and Pinarello gained market share.
2. Basso
Basso Bikes is an Italian bicycle manufacturer that was founded in 1977 by Alcide Basso. The company is known for producing high-end road bikes but has recently forayed into gravel bikes and electric road bikes,
Over the years, Basso Bikes has produced some damn good-looking road bikes. Their most expensive bike is the Diamante, which was introduced in 2009. Arguably it looks the best when fitted with a country-correct Campagnolo groupset – Super Record if you please!
3. Colnago
Although it’s not as old as some of its competitors, Colnago is an iconic Italian bicycle manufacturer that has been producing high-quality bikes for over 60 years. In some circles, the brand is seen as one of the best bike brands in the world.
Founded by Ernesto Colnago in 1954, the company has become synonymous with high-performance road bikes that combine cutting-edge technology with classic Italian style.
With their clover leaf logo and unique typeface, Colnago bikes are instantly recognisable, even before you get to the traditional frame shapes – no dropped seatstays here thank you!
One of the most iconic bikes produced by Colnago is the C40, which was introduced in 1994. The C40 was one of the first carbon fiber bikes to be used in professional cycling, and it quickly became a favorite among top riders. Today, Colnago continues to produce high-performance road bikes for professional athletes. Colnago is a long-time sponsor of Team UAE-Emirates, the world’s number-one ranked road cycling team in 2023.
Colnago’s dedication to excellence and advancement has earned them a reputation as one of the most esteemed and revered bicycle manufacturers worldwide. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a casual rider, a Colnago bike is guaranteed to deliver an exhilarating ride with a style that is second to none.
4. Pinarello
Pinarello is a leading Italian bicycle manufacturer that has been producing high-quality bikes for over 60 years. Founded by Giovanni Pinarello in 1952, the company is really all about high-performance road bikes.
Over the years, Pinarello has produced some of the most iconic bikes in the world, including the Dogma (with its easily recognisable wavy-looking frame), which was ridden to victory in the Tour de France by Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky in 2012. Since signing with Team Sky for their debut season in 2010, Pinarello has arguably ridden the crest of a wave, winning seven tours in eight years with four different riders.
Pinarello also offers a wide range of other road bikes, including the Gan, the Razha, and the Prince. Each of these bikes is designed to offer the best level of performance (and style) at a certain price.
Overall, Pinarello’s commitment to quality, innovation, and style has made them one of the most respected and admired bike manufacturers in the world. Whether you’re a professional racer or a weekend warrior, a Pinarello bike is sure to provide a thrilling ride.
5. Wilier Triestina
Wilier Triestina is an Italian bicycle manufacturer that was founded in 1906. The company has a long history in the North-Eastern part of Italy, in particular the regions of Fruili and the Veneto.
Over the years, Wilier Triestina has produced some eye-catching bikes. One of their most famous models is the Ramato, which was introduced in the 1980s. The Ramato featured a distinctive copper finish, which quickly became a trademark of the Wilier Triestina brand. Today the brand offers this paint job on a number of their models.
Today, Wilier Triestina continues to produce high-quality road bikes that are coveted by cyclists around the world, not just those in Italy. Their current lineup includes the 0 SLR, the Filante and the Cento10.
