The Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl rider attacked on the penultimate climb, soon got rid of all his opponents and started a solo ride of almost 45 kilometres. From the start in San Sebastin the course follows the coast without much climbing, so there is a chance for a break to form in the first 60 kilometres. When the race heads south, and inland, they hit the Azkarate (4.2km at 7.3%), followed by the Urraki (8.6km at 6.9%) and the Alkiza (4.4km at 6.2%). From then until 154 kilometres the race goes up and down.
